1948 London Olympics

BBC images, audio clips and programmes from the 1948 London Olympic 2012 Games have been archived online - ahead of the return of the event to the UK in Olympics 2012 London.

Original news broadcasts from 1948 including a speech from Prime Minister at the time, Clement Atlee, are among the BBC archives now available.

There are also photos from the opening ceremony and from a number of events as well as BBC programmes from the competition. The BBC has archived these images, clips and documents on its 1948 Olympics site.

The 1948 games became known as the Austerity Free Download Games Online - due to the economy and post-war rationing - and were the last time they were held in the UK after being scheduled for 1944 but then postponed because of the Second World War.

Germany and Japan were banned from the competition and the United States topped the medal leader board with 84 in total, 38 of them gold. Great Britain won 23 in total, with three gold medals.
